BookMachine Your Guide to the World of Publishing

BookMachine Your Guide to the World of Publishing Operating out of London, BookMachine.org describe themselves as a community for the people who make publishing happen. But what exactly does that mean? What can they do for us? Well, it turns out, a lot of things.EventsFor those living in London or nearby in Oxford, BookMachine hosts a variety of events ranging from instructional courses on developing e-books to developmental classes centered around increasing diversity in a prospective manuscript, or shopping your work to editors and publishers. These courses are developed by leaders in the industry, and they are designed to equip attendees with skills which will be assets in the publishing community. In addition, BookMachine partners with the London Book Fair each year. Members of BookMachine get 50% off of their tickets, and they gain access to networking events during the fair. All of these opportunities make a BookMachine membership an excellent opportunity if you live in or near London, but what about those of us who dont?Chann elsChannels are the most immediately helpful tools on the BookMachine website. Each channel is a compilation of free resources intended to support a certain field related to the publishing community. These channels provide everything from news and business articles, to interviews with authors and publishers, to speaking events with literary agents, to job postings in the industry. There are six of these channels, each affiliated with a BookMachine partner and tailored to that partners customers. The resources that each offers are extensive and free, so lets take a quick flip through them. The Business of Publishing Channel helps readers to keep an ear to the ground and to be up to date on developments in the publishing industry. It offers articles which address subjects such as the piracy of e-books and the effect this has on the industry, and the value of literary prizes and how these effect sales. This channel provides links to a host of video resources including interviews with em ployees inside Apple iBooks, and with booksellers and publishers who are well-known in the industry. The Design Channel offers some of the articles weve come to expect: 5 Author tips for briefing your designer and A guide on book title punctuation. The real meat of the channel though is in the frequent job postings and event notes. Positions for job titles such as junior designer and art director were available during my quick perusal, scattered about the page alongside a very helpful summary of the talking points at the recent Why we all need a good brief design conference. For those of us who cant attend these events in person, insight into the advice given at such conferences and access to job positions in the industry can be invaluable. The Tech Channel is hard-hitting for those of us who are savvy (or are seeking savviness) on the internet side of the publishing industry. Right off the bat, the first article is for a software developer â€" but if that doesnt sound like you, dont be concerned. There are plenty of resources for anyone who is seeking to expand his or her tech aptitude. Alongside the articles one might expect are some really interesting pieces on how VPAs (Virtual Personal Assistants like Alexa or Siri) and AI (Artificial Intelligence, such as the Google algorithms which find your website) can have a large effect on the marketing of a book. These articles explain how to optimize your advertisements based on the tools your potential readers are using to find your book. On top of all of these, there are links to several podcasts â€" great for listening to in the car, and delivering new information each week, for the low, low price of free. The Marketing and Publicity Channel provides a host of resources for small businesses, entrepreneurs, and authors on how to create a stir around their product. Like the other channels, job postings for Junior Marketing Executive and Online Marketing and Social Media Executive are scattered in alongside interview s, advice columns describing how to make your books stand out from the crowd, and reviews of changing standards in the industry. One such article addresses the very interesting and recently emerging ONIX meta-data management procedures which are meant to make books searchable by content in online stores and libraries. Adding simple meta-data to e-books can make them vastly more likely to be discovered. The Production Channel talks print production in articles such as smart, scalable and responsible print production, but it also examines work flow and new creative approaches to designing media in ways that couldnt be done in the past. One interesting article details the creation of an interactive animated storybook called Galdos Gift and the work that goes into pushing the boundaries of the publishing process, rather than placing the emphasis on the creation process. This section asks What can be done? with the technology available. The answer seems to be â€" quite a bit, and more as technology continues to advance. The Audio Channel may be my favorite of the six. Here is a collection of all the podcasts mentioned in the other sections, put into one place for easy access. It is also the place where authors or publishers can find advice about creating their own audio books and the markets related to those mediums. Articles here deal with early common misconceptions all the way to advanced techniques for remastering and eventually selling audio books in all formats. In addition to the channels, there is one extra little gem hidden away on the BookMachine website. Under the More tab on their main site, there are extra options. The first is the Water Cooler. For the job hunters out there, this section of the site functions as a networking platform and job board, and includes most of the jobs which are posted in the other channels, putting them all in one place.Professional resourcesOnce I finished browsing through the channels where BookMachine puts together their fre e articles, I clicked into their shop to see what a few wisely invested dollars might earn me. I was surprised to see that each of the e-books in their online store was also free. All I had to do was sign up for a free account. After I did so, I had access to four professionally written and developed digital articles which address editorial managers, business models in the digital age, the design process in publishing, and a report on the childrens and young adult literature consumer base. These are well-written and dense resources, but short enough that they can be read through quickly.MembershipBookMachine runs on a membership model and designs PR and marketing campaigns on a standard fee model. The average individual pays about £5.00 a month for membership (about $7.00 USD), and promoted memberships cost around £12.00 each month (about $16.00 USD). Both options offer a discount for a yearly membership, but purchasing a single month of membership to try before you buy is quite a ffordable when sampling BookMachines services to see if they are right for you. Each membership includes discounts with BookMachine partners (these include several design and marketing firms, as well as quite a few reputable publishing houses) and on BookMachine training courses, and it adds you to their members-only email competitions. The promoted membership gives you all of that, some additional tickets to BookMachine events, and a BookMachine profile meant to boost your visibility on social media and to act as a professional resource (like a LinkedIn profile) which you can use to represent your brand.Hiring BookMachineIf you are a company or an individual who is interested in having BookMachine create a PR campaign for your product, then they undertake every aspect from content creation, to PR campaigns, to social media management and Google AdWords placements. They have a number of user testimonials, and the costs of their services are based on the type of campaign you want to d esign, determined on a case-by-case basis.Their recent events speak to their abilities. They organized an event for Emerald Publishing which included speakers and authors discussing the future of academic publishing. The takeawayFor anyone working in a field related to publishing, the basic membership is a no-brainer. For small businesses or individuals who are looking to get their profile noticed in the publishing world, a membership can offer a useful tool for representing their interests professionally. For PR campaigns and marketing assistance, BookMachine seems like a trustworthy and reliable choice, and one that has already been successfully utilized by several companies in the industry. The success of events run by the BookMachine team should speak to their ability to provide the services needed to promote your product or brand.

Global Warming Is An Increasing Concern - 920 Words

Global warming is an increasing concern that people have to worry about everyday. Global warming is the overall rise in temperature in the atmosphere due to the increase in carbon dioxide (CO2). The CO2 acts as a cover and keeps all the heat on the earth, which is warming the planet to extensive amounts. When people burn fuels like coal and natural gas they release carbon into the earth and the carbon just keeps building up over time. Energy supply represents a big chunk of the problem for global warming. Forestry and the industry business also have a big influence on the global warming problem. The carbon that the people put in the atmosphere is going to help determine what will happen to future generations, and the climate of the future (climate hot weather 1). The climate change that is happening is causing a lot of damage. In the last 20 years the sea level has raised 0.13 inches. The major ice caps are melting at a rapid speed, and the oceans are warming up. In the last decade t he temperature around the world was the warmest ever on record. If the climate continues at the rate it is now, water availability will decrease and drought will probably occur (Grovenburg 1-9). People are not the only ones that are concerned about global warming. Wildlife needs this environment too and is aware of the problem. Six Major Classes of Nutrients Free Essays

There are six major classes of nutrients:  carbohydrates,  fats,  minerals,  protein,  vitamins, and  water. These nutrient classes can be categorized as either  macronutrients  (needed in relatively large amounts) or  micronutrients  (needed in smaller quantities). The macronutrients include carbohydrates (including  fiber), fats, protein, and water. We will write a custom essay sample on Six Major Classes of Nutrients or any similar topic only for you Order Now The micronutrients are minerals and vitamins. The macronutrients (excluding fiber and water) provide structural material (amino acids from which proteins are built, and lipids from which cell membranes and some signaling molecules are built) and  energy. Some of the structural material can be used to generate energy internally, and in either case it is measured in  Joules  or  kilocalories  (often called â€Å"Calories† and written with a capital  Cto distinguish them from little ‘c’ calories). Carbohydrates and proteins provide 17  kJ approximately (4  kcal) of energy per gram, while fats provide 37  kJ (9  kcal) per gram. ,[17]  though the net energy from either depends on such factors as absorption and digestive effort, which vary substantially from instance to instance. Vitamins, minerals, fiber, and water do not provide energy, but are required for other reasons. A third class of dietary material, fiber (i. e. , non-digestible material such as cellulose), is also required,[citation needed]  for both mechanical and biochemical reasons, although the exact reasons remain unclear. Molecules of carbohydrates and fats consist of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen atoms. Carbohydrates range from simple  monosaccharides  (glucose, fructose, galactose) to complexpolysaccharides  (starch). Fats are  triglycerides, made of assorted  fatty acid  monomers  bound to a  glycerol  backbone. Some fatty acids, but not all, are  essential  in the diet: they cannot be synthesized in the body. Protein molecules contain nitrogen atoms in addition to carbon, oxygen, and hydrogen. The fundamental components of protein are nitrogen-containing  amino acids, some of which are  essential  in the sense that humans cannot make them internally. Some of the amino acids are convertible (with the expenditure of energy) to glucose and can be used for energy production, just as ordinary glucose, in a process known as gluconeogenesis. By breaking down existing protein, some glucose can be produced internally; the remaining amino acids are discarded, primarily as urea in urine. This occurs normally only during prolonged starvation. Other micronutrients include  antioxidants  and  phytochemicals, which are said to influence (or protect) some body systems. Their necessity is not as well established as in the case of, for instance, vitamins. Most foods contain a mix of some or all of the nutrient classes, together with other substances, such as toxins of various sorts. Some nutrients can be stored internally (e. g. , the fat soluble vitamins), while others are required more or less continuously. Poor health can be caused by a lack of required nutrients or, in extreme cases, too much of a required nutrient. For example, both salt and water (both absolutely required) will cause illness or even death in excessive amounts. How to cite Six Major Classes of Nutrients, Essay examples

Lords Of Discipline By Pat Conroy Essays - The Citadel,

Lords Of Discipline By Pat Conroy The Lords of Discipline by Pat Conroy "I wear the ring and return often to the city of Charleston, South Carolina, to study the history of my becoming a man", (Conroy, 1). The Lords of Discipline is essentially the story of Will McLean growing up and learning what it really means to be an honorable man. He began the book as one person: a young, naive cadet in his senior year who used humor to keep everyone from seeing how troubled he was. The book ends with Will as a wholly different person due to catastrophic events that happened during the course of his final year at the Carolina Military Institute. Will endured the"plebe year" at the Institute, he fell in love with a pregnant girl, uncovered a well-hidden misuse of power in the Institute and because of that discovery, suffered the death of a close friend and the loss of many other people he thought he could trust. All these events contribute in different ways to Will becoming an honorable man. Will enrolled in the Institute because his father, on his deathbed, made him promise to graduate from the Institute, just as he had. He went on a basketball scholarship, unaware of the brutal initiation required for all freshman. Within the first minute of him arriving at registration, he was beaten and humiliated by upperclassmen. Then, he and the rest of his class were subjected to physical and mental torture whenever and wherever possible. They were afraid to use the bathroom, so they used the sinks in their rooms. The "plebes" , as the freshmen were called, also had"sweat parties" every night. All the doors in the room were locked and the heater was turned on. Then everyone lined up and followed the commands of the"cadre", upperclassmen. "My body took asylum in a mental and physical paralysis," (p. 147). The idea of the hazing was to separate the strong and capable cadets from the flimsy and weak. If a cadet whom was thought to be unworthy survived the hazing, they were treated to "The Taming". The cadre would find the weakness of the plebe and exploit it. If they were afraid of bugs, the cadre would cover the plebes body with insects until he agreed to leave the Institute. One boy, Bobby Bentley had managed to survive all the cadres had put him through. They picked on him because he wet his pants. All his classmate were rooting for him and helped him whenever he was being picked on. The angered the cadre more than anything. Then, all of a sudden, Bobby disappeared. All his belongings were packed. He vanished from the Institute. In the midst of all the turmoil around him, Will managed to survive, and even make some friends. Dante Pignetti, a poor, muscled Italian from New York, Mark Santoro, a loyal Yankee, and Tradd St. Croix, a wealthy Charleston aristocrat following in the footsteps of his father became his roommates. These four would form bonds that lasted all four years they attended the institute. Mark and "Pig" were the defenders for Tradd and Will. Tradd was teased for being effeminate and called "the honey prince". Will got in trouble for his sharp tongue and unwavering loyalty to the Honor Code of the school. The four of them made it to the end of the school year. There was twenty-eight in their class. Thirty-two had dropped out along the way. There was a picnic to celebrate the end of the year and the survival of the twenty-eight. The upperclassmen were there. Will vows "I will not be like them. I shall bear witness against them" (p. 206). He sensed something sinister and immoral under the surface, and decided he would we the one to uncover it. The torture he endured in the plebe year made him mentally and physically stronger. It also made him want to be all the more honorable than those around him. The book jumps ahead to Will's senior year. It was time for him to participate in the torture of the plebes. He showed little interest and tried to save who ever he could from being overwhelmed by the cadre. He saw a fat kid name Poteete being singled out for stronger punishment. Poteete cried whenever faced with the cadre. He refused to quit the school, another southerner being forced to follow in their fathers footsteps. A few days after meeting Will, he attempts to commit suicide. They find him hanging

Free Essays on Martin Luther King Jr.

Martin Luther King Jr. The nonviolent fight for Equality, Civil Rights, and Justice By: Sonia Aguilar Martin Luther King Jr., a martyr, a hero, a man with courage who fought for the equality and civil rights of black people in the United States of America (USA). He challenges segregation and racial discrimination in the 1950’s and 1960’s. He was born in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1929 and he was a Nobel Peace Prize winner. Martin Luther King Jr. is a legendary hero for black people and today’s society. He believes that man has the right to disobey just laws. King was strongly influenced by Gandhi’s use of nonviolent protests in India and he considered Gandhi’s teachings a valuable resource to apply in his leadership as the voice of black people in the U.S.A. His principle idea was to achieve equality and develop improved civil rights for black people in America without using violence. One of the most important influences on King was Gandhi’s theory of nonviolent resistance. Gandhi was educated in law at the University College in London, England. He worked in South Africa where he was treated as a member of an inferior race and he was shocked at the widespread denial of civil liberties and political rights to the Indians. Gandhi began teaching a policy of passive resistance after experiencing personal attacks by white South Africans. In 1914 the government of South Africa began to recognize Indian marriages and abolished the poll tax for them. With improvements in South Africa Gandhi felt free to return to India and begin a campaign for home rule. He became a leader in India and used passive resistance techniques to fight for political and economic independence from Britain. He became the international symbol of a free India. He lived a spiritual life of prayer, fasting, and meditation. Gandhi’s advocacy of nonviolence was the expression of a way of life implicit in the Hindu religion. King studied deep... Free Essays on Martin Luther King Jr. Free Essays on Martin Luther King Jr. This letter was written by a man who was sick and tired of seeing African Americans becoming acquired to feeling like their nobodies or outsiders in a world where the phrase â€Å"all men are created equal† was being preached everyday. For over 350 years African Americans have been denied there constitutional and God given rights for being judged by their skin color. Freedom fighter Martin Luther King sought out to put an end to this discrimination against blacks. After receiving his doctorate in theology from Boston University in 1955, King became a pastor at a church in Montgomery, Alabama. As the leader of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, King organized many marches, boycotts, and sit-ins. In 1963 he was arrested and put into Birmingham Jail where he wrote his â€Å"Letter from Birmingham Jail† addressed to white clergymen who opposed his demonstration. In my opinion Kings argument is solid and respectable because of his strong yet caring tone, org anization of poin! ts, and the support he uses. First of all, Kings tone plays an important role in this letter, the education and vocabulary he uses lets people know that he knows what he’s talking about. Kings argument is so effective because he is not outright slandering his opposition, which would make them even angrier. He kind of goes through each point, which is most likely, a fact, like he’s reading a sermon and says things like â€Å"I’m sorry to say† before each point, which means he is sorry to bring up this truth but this truth has to be known to all. King who is a very religious man often mentions passages from the bible, for instance he says â€Å"†¦he is in Birmingham because injustice is here† and then compares it to when the Apostle Paul left his hometown to go to other parts of the world to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ. King also mentions numerously that he uses non-violent campaigns, which shows that he doesn’t want to do any harm to any... Free Essays on Martin Luther King Jr. Michael Luther King was born January 15, 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia to Alberta Williams King a schoolteacher and Pastor Martin Luther King. King broadened his education at Crozer Theological Seminary in Pennsylvania where he received his bachelor degree with honors in Theology in 1951. King excelled his education in Theology and earned a doctoral degree from Boston University in 1955. King studied teachings on nonviolent protest of Indian leader Mohandas Gandhi at Morehouse, Crozer, and Boston University; King visited India and credited Gandhi on his techniques on his civil-rights success. Other ministers also influenced King. King met his wife Coretta Scott King at Boston University they married in 1953, shortly after they moved to his wife hometown Montgomery, Alabama where they had four children Yolanda Denise, Martin Luther III, Dexter and Bernice. In 1954 King first pastored at Dexter Avenue Baptist church in Montgomery, Alabama. Martin Luther King Jr. is considered a great legend then and now for the civil rights movement. French Prepositions with Geographical Names

French Prepositions with Geographical Names Deciding which French  preposition  to use with countries, cities, and other  geographical names  can be somewhat confusing, at least until now! This lesson will explain which prepositions to use and why. Gendered Nouns Like all French  nouns, geographical names like countries, states, and provinces have a  gender. Knowing the gender of each geographical name is the first step in determining which preposition to use. As a general guideline, geographical names which end in  e  are  feminine, while those that end in any other letter are masculine. There are, of course, exceptions which simply have to be memorized. See the individual lessons for explanations of the gender of each geographical name. Examples In English, we use three different prepositions with geographical names, depending on what we are trying to say. Je vais  en  FranceIm going  to  FranceJe suis  en  FranceIm  in  FranceJe suis  de  FranceIm  from  France However, in French numbers 1 and 2 take the  same  preposition. Whether you are going  to France or you are  in  France, the same preposition is used. Thus in French there are only two prepositions to choose from for each type of geographical name. The difficulty lies in knowing which preposition to use for a city vs a state vs a country.
